The Best Eye Creams for Wrinkles of 2019, According to Dermatologists

Do you know the reason why the skin around the eyes tends to look older first: that delicate area is sensitive to stretching and sagging, so it matures faster than other parts of the face.

So, if maintaining a youthful complexion is important to you, it is vital to use an eye cream every day. The point is that there are thousands of options available, and it can be difficult to know what to look for in the ingredient list. Even if you know what to look for, tracking something that fits the bill can be exhausting. (Read: almost impossible).

So we did the work for you and talked to some dermatologists to find out exactly what should be in an effective wrinkle cream and the best non-prescription purchases to try.

The ways to choose the best eye cream for wrinkles and fine lines
What makes an eye cream anti-aging? Tara Rao, MD, dermatologist at the Schweiger Dermatology Group and Joshua Zeichner, MD, dermatologist at Mount Sinai Hospital, mentioned some key ingredients to look for.

Hyaluronic acid: naturally found in the skin, hyaluronic acid is a form of sugar that is extracted in water, which helps hydrate and replenish the skin. Many times, wrinkles under the eyes are the result of dryness, says Dr. Rao, and hyaluronic acid is well studied and has been shown to help reduce the signs of aging. (See these eye creams for dry skin if hydration is your main problem).

Peptides: It is believed that copper peptides, polypeptides and oligopeptides penetrate the skin and help form hyaluronic acid and collagen. These structural proteins hold cells and tissues together like glue, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Retinol: This vitamin A derivative stimulates the production of collagen and promotes cell renewal to help reduce the signs of aging. Because the skin under the eyes is so sensitive, the dermatologists we talked to recommended products with relatively low concentrations of retinol.

Sunscreen: “This is obvious,” says Dr. Rao. Without adequate protection, UV rays break down collagen and age your skin. Unfortunately, SPF can be difficult to find in eye creams.

Antioxidants: Vitamins C and E, ferulic acid and berry extracts help reduce oxidative stress due to UV rays or contaminants, explains Dr. Rao. Antioxidants will also improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
